SHANE MARTIN

Shane Martin is 43 years old, married to wife Laura and together they have 3 children; Kesler (16), Ian (11) and Sarah (9).  Shane's hometown is Eden, UT.  Shane is a Radiation Therapist and real estate investor.

Here are a few facts about Shane when we asked him about running:

Years Running: 32 years (11 years ultra running)

Weekly Mileage: 60-75 miles (average during summer months)

Favorite race distance or race:  50 and 100 milers

PR's - (5k, 10k, 1/2, marathon, ultra) or proudest running accomplishment: 
10k: 35:00
half: 1:15
marathon: 2:58
50 mile: 7:25
100 mile: 22:21
Proudest accomplishment: finishing my 1st 100 mile (Leadville)

Favorite training run:  Ben Lomond/ Willard Peak/ skyline trails near home.  Trails in the high country above 9000ft (high Uintahs)

Why run - (Motivation, inspiration):  Running gives me life and a higher sense of achievement.  I love to inspire/motivate others to run, directly or indirectly.

Goals:  sub 24 at the wasatch 100, sub 9 hour at squaw peak 50, run faster than the young guns!

Favorite music to run to:  Good mix of music - current favorite is Muse.  Rarely run with music - mostly just in the winter on the Weber State Track.

Favorite running gear - (shoes, apparel, etc.):  Brooks Cascadia (shoes), Moretz power soks (socks), Gregory stimulas hydration pack (long runs), Ultimate Direction hand held bottles (training/racing), hammer gel/carb boom, succeed caps/endurolytes.

Best advice you've been given as a runner:  your biggest task is not to get ahead of others, but to surpass yourself.

Best motivational quote:  "The obsession with running is really an obsession with the potential for more and more life."

Your role model:  Tim Twietmyer (ultra runner) for his consistency and longevity in the sport.

Favorite food:  pizza, mexican and almost everything else!

hobbies or interests other than running:  Backpacking, skiing/snowboarding, mountain biking, golfing, fishing and spending time with my family.

Anything else the world might want to know about you: 
Ran my first marathon when I was 11 years old (Deseret news marathon 1978)
Finished my first 100 miler in 2001 (Leadville)
100Milers:  Leadville (2), Western States (2), Bear (2), Wasatch (8) running my 9th this year
15+ 50 milers including 10 Squaw peak
numerous 50ks
numerous marathons
Uintah's highline trail in two days (self supported)
