Hello,
The Wastach 100 is scheduled for this Friday & Saturday, September 9th & 10th. It's a big race with some big-time runners, too big to talk about just one runner, so this month we're giving you two Runner Spotlights:
Terry Foust is running his 5th Wasatch 100 this year. It's a crazy race that just keeps calling and I think Terry is hooked. He started out innocently enough with solid performances at the St. George & Ogden Marathons. Then he started running them every year and added in the Park City and Top of Utah Marathons, but once the Wasatch bug bit him in 2005, there was no turning back. He nailed the Leadville 100 trail race last year with a 29 hour finish, he's turned in great performances at the Squaw Peak 50, Ogden Valley 50 and we see him every year at the Winter Racing Circuit but he loves the Speedgoat 50K at Snowbird. Speedgoat is beyond crazy; it's 31 miles of hardcore climbing at really high altitudes. The hills are so steep and long at Speedgoat they say it has more vertical gain per mile than the Hardrock 100; unbelievable. Runners not prepared for the climbing at Speedgoat will dropout at mile 15 because they're nauseous from the lack of oxygen and their legs are toast. This is what Terry does for fun; he's finished it 3 times and every year he gets faster. It's extremely difficult to drop any time at Speedgoat but since 2009 he's dropped 3 hours! "Incredible" is all I have to say. With the run he had at Speedgoat this year he's sure to have a lot of success at Wasatch this weekend - Good Luck, we know you'll do great. Phil Lowry is affectionately known in the ultra running world as HyperPhil. He picked up that moniker when he was 28 years old because once he discovered ultra trail running he couldn't get enough of it; so he would constantly call and call people to go running and ask where to run and sign up for races, then he would register for more races then he would measure courses then go on multi-day runs then run some more. 17 years later he's still the same way. He's the only guy I know who will run Kings Peak on a whim in the middle of the week, in 8 hours no less, then wake up the next day and run to Ben Lomond & Willard Peak. He's not just "hyper" he's super fit. The first time I met Phil he was coming through the aid station at mile 66 at the Bear 100; he was running the race and acting as the co-race director. How is that even possible? Phil can do it. Phil will no doubt finish his 15th Wasatch 100 this year; only question is how close to the top will he be? He placed 2nd at the inaugural Blackhills 100 in South Dakota earlier this year; impressive considering he did it in a hail storm, rain, cold and mud. He'll make it an exciting race. If you want to see something impressive, go to www.ultrasignup.com and type in Phil's name and look at his results over the years (Phillip Lowry); it's pretty cool.
