Here are some facts about Rex when asked about running:
Years Running: Off and on all my life but really got started when we were stationed in Germany in the late 70's.
Weekly Mileage: 25-35. Sometimes I will bump it up to 40-45 just before a marathon.
Favorite race distance or race: ½ marathons are my favorite distance but my favorite race has got to be the St. George Marathon. It better be as I have done it for 24 years now.
PR's or proudest running accomplishment: My PR for a marathon is 3:14 and I'm sure I will never beat that again. My proudest moment was being able to take 1st place in my age group at the Air Force Marathon this Sept. Just 110 days after having a serious heart attack.
Favorite training run: Each late Summer and early Fall ATK Thiokol puts on 4 or 5 training runs that are so much fun and are geared towards both the Top Of Utah and St. George Marathons.
Why Run: Motivation for my running was that my Dad had a very serious heart attack when he was in his 40's and another when he was in his 50's. I did not want that to happen to me, so I started running. I think I delayed the attack for 20 years or so. I also found that when I was overseas and under lots of stress if I went running first thing when I got home in the evening I could be almost human to my good wife and kids.
GOALS: Just be able to keep on running with my many friends and not to fall too far behind.
Favorite music to run to: Music to my old ears in listening to my friends talk when we are running.
Favorite running gear: For a lot of years I have been running in Asics Cumulus and when I run a marathon I run in Brooks Burn. My favorite hat is an old lime green hat that I got in Boston in 1990.
Best advice you've been given as a runner: Rest days make running days better.
Best motivational quote: "This to shall pass".
Your role model: My dad, he always told me to do my best and everything will work out.
Favorite food: My good wife's cooking has always been on top of the list. I do love Mexican food.
Hobbies or interests other than running: Hunting, fishing, and touring the country with my wife and friends on our motorcycle.
Anything else the world might want to know about you: Running has really been good to me in so many ways. When I had my heart attack I found out just how many wonderful friends I had. Besides so many close friends, I have met so many neat people and saw so many nice places that I would never have seen had it not been for running.
