NOVEMBER - RUNNER SPOTLIGHT
spacer (1K)
Hello,
Okay, I'm sitting here gathering my thoughts; getting ready to write about our November Runner Spotlight, Jamie Remkes, and it's a daunting task.  Where do I start?  Jamie has had such a diverse and impressive streak of running year after year, I don't want to miss anything.  Even when she's been injured, she's still able to string together an impressive block of race finishes.  For example:  Jamie is one of a handful of runners who have run the Ogden Marathon every year.  She kept her streak alive a few years back (2008 I think) even with a broken foot.  She ran the Ogden Marathon that year with a walking cast on her foot, and then later that same year she ran the Squaw Peak 50, Mesa Falls Marathon, Top of Utah Marathon and the St. George Marathon - unbelievable!  Jamie has been running for well over 20 years, her first marathon was in St. George in 1993.  Since that first marathon she's ran all the Utah marathons multiple times in addition to the Big Sur Marathon, Valley of Fire Marathon, Tri State Marathon, Pocatello Marathon, Las Vegas Marathon, Timp Trail Marathon and a bunch of other marathons I've never even heard of like the Palm Beaches Marathon, Grizzly Marathon and Surf City Marathon.  She's even done the Spudman Triathlon, but Jamie has developed into a very good ultra runner.  Even in this other world of  (ultra) running she's "been there and done that" with finishes at the Moab 50K, Squaw Peak 50, Big Horn 50, American River 50, Speedgoat 50K, Silver State 50K, Midnight Mountain 50K and the very tough El Vaquero Loco 50K.  Jamie even got herself a 100 mile finish at the Lean Horse 100 this year with a time of 27:21. Running is a family affair in the Remkes family; Jamie ran Lean Horse with her husband (Tom) and brother-in-law (Ron). Jamie has paced Tom on many 100 miles races, but now she has one to call her own - congratulations! They run everything together; even Tom & Jamie's kids have all run marathons.  It's so cool see the Remkes' run in together as a family at the end of a race; 2 weeks ago at the Ogden Valley 50, they all did just that.  Jamie has had a great 2011, but it's not over yet, she has the Antelope Island 50K on Saturday.  She'll do great, there's no doubt.  We're very fortunate to know Jamie and have her as a friend.  You can read all about Jamie at www.stridersrunning.com

November 12th

Meet at the main gate at 8am and carpool out to the Mountain View trailhead. We will run south to the Lower Frary parking lot and turn around. This is part of the 50 and 100 mile course. This run is fairly easy, flat and very runnable. If you want to lengthen the run, just go further south. The entire trail is 11.4 miles long. Our run will be around 12 miles.

December 3rd

Meet at the main gate at 8am. We'll go out to the race start/finish and run the White Rock trail, return to the start/finish then head north and run the Lakeside trail around the north end of the island. Probably around 14-15 miles.

January 8th

8am, main gate, notice a pattern here?  This time we'll go to the race start/finish, We'll do both the White Rock and Split Rock trails, and throw in the Elephant Head out and back as well. Probably around 17-18 miles.

February 4th

Once again, meet at the main gate at 8am. This time we'll go to the Mountain View trailhead and run south to the ranch and back. This is a fairly flat and very runnable trail. If you want to cut this one short, turn around at the Lower Frary parking lot, This will get you about 11-12 miles. Distance - 22.8 miles

March 3rd

Meet at the main gate at 8am. This will be our last long run and will be the longest. We'll start at the race start/finish, run the White Rock and Split Rock trails, maybe Elephant Head, then for those who want to, we'll run over to run the trail to Bridger Bay campground and around the Lakeside trail. Good preview for the 50 mile runners. If you run everything, I'm guessing it's around 23-24 miles. Just the White Rock/Split Rock combo is 13.5 miles.

Also, as it usually does, weather may play a factor in where we run, but unless the roads are impassable, the runs will take place. Many times the weather along the front can be crappy while on the island it can be sunny, nice, and beautiful.

THANKS AND HAVE A GREAT NOVEMBER!!!
