If you've looked at our website recently and wondered if STRIDERS is venturing into cycling; we're not. The mechanics at The Bikers Edge will tell you I struggle with even the simplest task of changing a punctured tire tube and I'm still learning how to shift gears and peddle at the same time. No, turns out our May Runner Spotlight, Nate Baldwin, is also a very accomplished cyclist and triathlete. Just to cover all his running achievements would cause carpal tunnel syndrome, so here's the highlights:

  • 22 marathons with his fastest at the 2009 Boston Marathon (3:02).
  • Ran the Rome Marathon in 2006
  • 17:42 Ogden Marathon 5K
  • 1:25 St. George Half-Marathon

It would take most people a lifetime to run 22 marathons but Nate did it before he was 30 (We first met Nate when he was a baby-faced 23 year old and now he's a baby-faced 30 year old. He's single too ladiesJ) Okay, back on track. In addition to all the running, Nate has finished 18 triathlons; in fact, Nate just finished toughest of all the Ford Ironman races last Saturday - Ironman St. George in 12 hours and some change. Before that he finished the Texas ½ Ironman, the Silverman ½ Ironman, Ironman Kentucky, and Ironman Arizona. He's also knocked out LOTOJA twice; finishing in 10 hours. The real kicker is Nate's best sport is golf; he's a bit of a legend at Wolf Creek. Last year he just missed the cut qualifying for the Utah Open. Nate is a modern day renaissance man; he owns his own business and even at one time owned a mini-van.

Nate comes from a good family; the whole Baldwin family are great friends of Striders. You can read all about Nate at www.stridersrunning.com

WINTER RACING CIRCUIT 2011
We've put a bow on the 2011 Winter Racing Circuit! Even with the hard winter, we got really lucky with the weather at each race. Thanks to all of you who came out, ran and supported the series. Double thanks to all the volunteers who helped at packet pick-ups, aid stations, course clean-up, cutting chips off shoes at the finish line and cheered as the runners came in. We'll be back at it in 2012. Look for registration to open in September.

If you ran the WRC, you should be all trained-up and ready for the Ogden Marathon on May 21st. Ogden this year will literally be Utah's "Spring Run-Off." We might all be swimming down Ogden Canyon. There are a lot of good runners competing in this year's race; it's going to be exciting to see how it all turns out. STRIDERS will be out in full force at the Marathon expo on May 20th at the Union Station from 10am-8pm. We'll have lots of cool stuff we normally don't have in the store, so come check it out and say "hi."

MEMORIAL DAY CLASSIC 1/2, 5K AND KIDS MILE
After the Ogden Marathon, the kids have only 2 weeks of school left before the summer break. Come help us kick summer off at the Memorial Day Classic ½ Marathon, 5K & Kids Mile in Syracuse on Memorial Day, May 30th. Last year we were able to raise a nice chunk of change for our favorite children's charity, NO MORE VICTIMS. If you're not aware; the NO MORE VICTIMS foundation provides free counseling to children who are victims of sexual abuse. There are many programs for the perpetrators of these crimes, there's even a big state funded prison, but the young victims of these crimes are often left with nothing with nobody to talk to and nowhere to go. Our slogan this year is BE THE SOLUTION. So, before the bbq and the noodle salad, please come out and run for a good cause. Details at STRIDERS and www.stridersrunning.com

Morgan has a marathon! Here are some of the details:
Come make your mark in the Inaugural Morgan Valley Marathon, Half Marathon or 5K on Saturday July 30th 2011! This is the one you've been waiting for! Located in the mountains just 20 miles out of Ogden up Weber Canyon (I-84).

The course loops through the beautiful Morgan Valley; beginning and ending at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. MVM has everything you want in a race: beautiful scenery, a gentle (not too hilly) course, happy- helpful volunteers, great prizes and the most awesome schwag bag ever! Not to mention the cool finishers medal and tech shirt! Don't miss out on this one! For more information and to register visit www.morganmarathon.com

BAIRGUTSMAN
Registration for the BAIRGUTSMAN is open and filling up fast. The GUTSMAN is a classic, good ?ol boy trail race. Well, "trail" is probably not an accurate description unless you say "trail of blood" or "a tear left its trail on his cheek as he walked draggingly up the mountain." The GUTSMAN is a gut-check for any athlete; if you want to look tough then get the neck tattoo or wear the Tapout t-shirt from the Buckle, but if you want to BE tough then this is your event. Even the Spartans wouldn't know what to think of Crazy Bob. Registration forms are available at www.stridersrunning.com; you can also register at STRIDERS or online at www.strideracing.com The day is August 6th.

HUNTSVILLE 1/2 MARATHON & 5K
The Huntsville ½ Marathon & 5K is scheduled Labor Day weekend; Saturday, September 3rd. This race is well over 30 years old and one of the oldest road races in Utah. It's also one of the most scenic. If you got into the St. George marathon, this is a great tune-up race. The Huntsville race is also a fundraiser for the Weber State Track alliance. So, let's get all the runners, joggers and walkers who bleed purple up to Huntsville this Labor Day weekend.

OV50
It's been 5 years now. You've pondered the possibility; you've wondered if it could be done; if you could do it. You've seen your friends do it; you've driven the course and dreamed about it. 2011 is your year. OV50 - October 22nd. The world will be different on the 23rd; you won't be able feel your legs for awhile - true. But after you recover you'll have legs of steel and anything will be possible.

For a full list of Utah running events, be sure to visit www.utahrunning.com

STRIDERS is now renting wetsuits - $40 for the weekend. No reservations; first come first serve. Come in for details. Just don't drown in it; renting it afterwards would be awkward.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
