Maureen and Amanda Sletten
Age: 46 and 26
Family demographics: John, husband of 28 years and father for 26 years, who at times questions our sanity but will meet us at the finish line none the less. Two year old yellow fellow and enthusiastic running coach Opey.
Occupation: Maureen, General Manager of Jeremiah's restaurant. Amanda, WSU student and shift manager/ waitress at Jeremiah's.We love food.
Hometown: Maureen, Harrisburg PA, Amanda, Clovis NM, but our hearts and our running shoes belong right here in Ogden.
Years running: Maureen, running for 15 years, really enjoying it for the last 6 years. Amanda, 15 months and loving it.
Weekly mileage: Varies from 20 to 40 miles per week.
Favorite race distance or race: Half-marathon, because 5 K's hurt way too bad
PR's - (5K, 10K, ½, mara, Ultra) or proudest running accomplishment: Crossing the finish line together at this years Ogden Marathon. Maureen's third marathon, Amanda's first marathon.
Favorite training run: Hyrum to Brigham City over Sardine for a long (19 mile) training run, but we truly love the trails on Ogden's east bench for our daily runs.
Why run - (motivation, inspiration): Maureen, not to live longer, but to live all the days of my life as a strong, independent, able bodied being. Amanda, to feel like a little girl again, and they don't do lobotomies any more.
Goals: Maureen, to be able to run in the 60 plus age category. Amanda, to qualify for Boston (any suggestions on dropping about an hour and a half off of my current time are greatly appreciated J).
Favorite music to run to: Our play lists consist of everything from P!nk to The Rolling Stones but sometimes we like to run at the speed of chat.
Favorite running gear - (shoes, apparel, etc.): We like Brookes stuff.
Best advice you've been given as a runner: Maureen, always rotate two pair of different shoes Amanda, running or walking you still have to cover the same distance, running just gets you there faster was my mantra at about mile 23 of the marathon.
Best motivational quote: "You can either throw in the towel or use the towel to wipe the sweat off of your face."
Your role model: Maureen,- I must say that I am incredibly proud of Amanda. She quit smoking, started running, lost 25lbs, and completed her first marathon after running for a little over one year. She showed die hard perseverance, dedication and discipline. She rocks. Amanda- My mom is my hero and mentor, she is one of the strongest women I know. She has shown strength and perseverance through such things as knee surgery, and a broken neck. She truly is amazing.
Favorite food: At the risk of sounding odd we have experienced, on multiple occasions and in multiple locations, olfactory hallucinations involving doughnuts, yes ladies and gentlemen that's right we smell DOUGHNUTS! That having been said, the first time we saw doughnuts at the finish of a Striders race we thought it was a mirage.we love doughnuts.all kinds.a lot.and coffee.a lot.
Hobbies or interests other than running: God, Dogs, Books.
Anything else the world might want to know about you: We loved this years Ogden Marathon, from the course to the volunteers it could not have been more perfect. We cannot imagine there being a better marathon. Our favorite half-marathon has to be the other half-marathon Moab UT, in October, what a beautiful time of year to experience southern UT.
