Kym Buttschardt
Kym is 42 years old, married to Supa Pete and together they have 3 Princes: Jackson 12, Philip, 10, Lucas 5. Kym and Pete own Roosters Brewing Company and the Union Grill. Kym is from Ogden, UT and in case you don't know Kym she is the Local Community #1 Cheerleader for Ogden!
Here are a few facts about Kym when we asked her about running:
Years running: I started running my sophomore year in college. I don't know if I would call what I do "running", but I have love being on the road and especially on trails for 23 years.
Weekly mileage: Hard to say. At this point, it is more about being a hiking diva for me and doing a bunch of other stuff due to some foot problems that don't allow me to run. I go on about two really good hikes per week and ride mountain and road bikes depending on who invites me. :)
Favorite race distance or race: Xterra Triathlon. Love that race. Period. Combines all the things I love about Utah. Fresh Water, Mountains and Wildflowers and a good party afterwards.
PR's - (5K, 10K, ½, mara, Ultra) or proudest running accomplishment:
Napa Valley Marathon in the worst weather I could ever imagine. Certainly didn't break any records, but I survived and most importantly, my two friends, Mikelle and Diane survived their first marathon in unbelievable conditions. For me, it is all about the friendships and figuring out the world with friends while exercising.
Favorite training run:
Any training run with all of my Diva Friends. I always come back a better person from the conversation combined with the mountain.
Why run - (motivation, inspiration):
It feels good inside. Period. I would rather run with someone, but I also love it when the sun is going down and I am on the shoreline trail and I think to myself "Wow, I live here. How blessed am I?"
Goals:
I want to continue to explore mountains and trails. I wish that I would have been exposed to this as a child and I make every effort to imprint mountains and the outdoors into the brains of my 3 princes.
Favorite music to run to:
Anything that is just plain happy and groovy and makes me bounce along. I'm not a rapper, not a hard rock girl, not any of that.
Favorite running gear - (shoes, apparel, etc.):
Striders shoes. For sure. Striders gear. For sure. And anything with a really good print or color!
Best advice you've been given as a runner:
Umm.. Not sure about advice. I am so incredibly non-competitive that it has always been about the during and post-run buzz for me.
Best motivational quote:
Get Out and Live! I mean it. To me that says it all. Just Get Out and Live. Whether it is live music, running on a trail, going on a mountain bike ride, exposing your kids to all of the above, just Get Out and Live.
Your role model: All of my Divas friends. Damn, they are beautiful souls. Anyone I have shared a cool hike or run with automatically has a quality that I tune into and becomes my role model. I don't know why my brain is wired this way, but I immediately see the good in people and it makes me want to be a better person.
Favorite food: Utah Tomatoes and Beets. I know, weird, beets. Something I hated as a child and have liberated myself with as an adult, post 30 something discovery.
Hobbies or interests other than running:
As I said above, I love live music, mountain biking, road biking, especially learning to swim this year, and discovering a bigger world, even in my own town.
Anything else the world might want to know about you:
I feel incredibly lucky to live in a community with soul and authenticity and I am astounded by the opportunities that abound here and feel an urge to give back and pay it forward. It is very important to me to support the greater good and also teach my boys to do so.
