Ken and Janae Richardson
JANAE RICHARDSON
Janae is 27 years old and her hometown is Idaho Falls, ID. Janae is the CEO of the Richardson Household (aka full-time "mommy"); Coach at Davis High School (cross country and track) and a Coach of a variety of other runners; Owner (along with Ken and two of our friends) of UtahRunning.com. "I'm so lucky to be married to Ken who understands my running passion and loves me for who I am. We have a beautiful one year old daughter that has brought us more joy in just one year than I ever thought possible."
Here are a few facts about running when we asked Janae:
Years running: I liked to race against boys in elementary school at recess to see if I could beat them, but I didn't start officially competing until the 7th grade.so I guess almost 16 years.
Weekly mileage: It varies depending on the time of year, but anywhere between 40-60 miles.
Favorite race distance or race: ½ marathon
PR's - (5K, 10K, ½, mara, Ultra) or proudest running accomplishment: 5K- 17:10; 10K- 35:30; ½- 1:22:53 (Top of Utah); 2:59:53 (St. George)
Favorite training run: I really love running on the trails above Ogden. I've run them so many times that I could probably run them with my eyes closed.and still manage to dodge the golf balls while cutting through Mt. Ogden Golf Course J
Why run - (motivation, inspiration): I run because it brings my life balance and helps center me. I run because it's hard and I like a challenge. I like setting goals, working, and accomplishing what you set your mind to doing. There is definitely a sense of accomplishment that comes from pushing your body to its limits and running does this for me.
Goals: I would like to qualify for the Olympic Trials in the marathon
Favorite music to run to: whatever song is in my head on a given day
Favorite running gear - (shoes, apparel, etc.): Asics Nimbus for shoes and any apparel that is light and comfy.
Best advice you've been given as a runner: "Run Fast!"
Best motivational quote: "It's easy to work hard when you are feeling good, but you find out what you are really made of?your true character?by what you do when things are tough." --Bob Hagert (my high school coach) "To give less than your best is to sacrifice the gift." -Steve Prefontaine
Your role model: Anyone who finishes a marathon.which makes you ultramarathoners gods
Favorite food: Fettuccine Alfredo (I'm a fan of the Olive Garden variety)
Hobbies or interests other than running: Anything outdoors?hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding
Anything else the world might want to know about you: 4'11'' (almost) and still waiting for that growth spurt (aren't distance runners supposed to be tall with long legs???)
KEN RICHARDSON
Ken is 30 years old and is married to his beautiful bride Janae. Together they have a cute little girl Raelee(13 months). Ken is a Hubby, Daddy, HR Manager and UtahRunning.com guru. Ken's hometown is South Jordan; moved around a little bit and landed back in Utah so now I claim Ogden.
Here are a few facts about Ken when asked about running:
Years running: 15
Weekly mileage: 30-90 depending on how motivated I am feeling
Favorite race distance or race: Steeplechase
PR's - (5K, 10K, ½, mara, Ultra) or proudest running accomplishment:
Running at the NCAA Championships ranks up there as a couple of my proudest running accomplishments. More than anything now, I remember the support that I felt from my parents and my coaches. I try to remember that now when I run, it isn't necessarily how fast you run because the memories you have are about those people you run with and who supported you while you ran.
Favorite training run: Bonneville Shoreline Trail between Weber State and 12th Street (gotta love the trails in Ogden).
Why run - (motivation, inspiration): I run because it makes me feel good. I feel more healthy, more motivated, and it also helps me to keep things in focus. A good run helps me clear my mind, sort out problems, and focus on my goals.
Goals: I'd like to run a sub 2:20 marathon. I haven't decided which one yet, but I'll probably have to go to sea level to do it. We'll see how things go.
Favorite music to run to: Janae teases me because I have books on tape on my ipod. Okay, so I'm a nerd, but she's fine with it, so I guess it's okay.
Favorite running gear - (shoes, apparel, etc.): Asics (sorry Brad - I'll go with Adidas for apparel). oh yeah, and my UtahRunning.com shirts.
Best advice you've been given as a runner: Train smarter, not necessarily harder.
Best motivational quote: "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" (Benjamin Franklin)
Your role model: My dad. He has always stayed fit while keeping everything else in life in balance. He has finished so many marathons I have to take my shoes off to count them. He had a pretty bad skiing accident this past winter and I hope that some day we will be able to run a marathon together.
Favorite food: Whatever is in front of me. I love food and "if the furnace is hot enough, it will burn anything" (go read once a runner, that's a good book and there are a lot more great quotes)
Hobbies or interests other than running: I enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, snowboarding, fishing, and just about every other outdoor or sport activity. Horseshoes is a cool game and I'm really excited to bust out the croquet set we got for Christmas.
Anything else the world might want to know about you: We just started UtahRunning.com and we would love to have any feedback. Check out the site and send us an e-mail or stop by the store and tell John and Kristin what you think.
