Clothing Sale

July always puts us in a good mood at Striders; the weather is consistently good, we get a couple of Holidays, Shad and Krisitn have birthdays and food off the grill just tastes better.  So because we're happy and tan these days, and we need to clear out some apparel before the fall season, we're marking down all apparel 20% off and all winter apparel will be marked down anywhere from 30-50%.  Quintana Roo wetsuits are on sale too but we have limited sizes until late August.  We'll have more wetsuits before the XTERRA Triathlon on September 26th but don't hesitate too long if you want a Q-Roo.

TRAINING RUNS
spacer (1K)

Okay, as some of you know I'm training for the Wasatch 100 again and haven't been able to organize many Saturday training runs; most of my running these days is on some obscure trail in the middle of nowhere with my dog and a few other crazies.  Once I'm through with this little phase we'll get back to some safer training runs.  Thanks for your patience in the meantime.  If you want to jump in on some mountain running, our friend Aric Manning has a blog announcing trail training runs in the Ogden area.  Take a look:  http://oatr.blogspot.com/

July Spotlight - Cory T. Johnson
spacer (1K)

Hello,

Every so often we meet a runner with the "HOLY CRAP" factor.  After getting to know Cory Johnson over the years; he not only has the HC factor, but you really have to wonder how much paint he's been sniffing over there at Old School Body Shop.  This year alone I know he's ran a 50K in Moab, the Buffalo Run 50 miler, the American River 50 Miler, Sapper Joe 50K, Squaw Peak 50 Miler, the Big Horn 100 miler and on Friday he's running the Hard Rock 100 miler (www.hardrock100.com ) in the thin air of the San Juan mountain range in southwest Colorado.  The #1 rule at Hard Rock is No Whining, and with an altitude range of 7,700 to 14,000 feet with an average of 11,800 feet, Hard Rock is known as the toughest 100 mile race on the planet -- Cory has finished it twice already.  What Cory does isn't trail running; it's hardcore mountain running.  Hundreds of thousands of people every year will finish a marathon, even 20 thousand people will finish the elite Boston Marathon from year to year, but only about 100 runners will finish Hard Rock.  You can follow Cory's progress this weekend at the Hard Rock 100 with the above link.

Cory trains and races hard and still manages to operate and own one of the biggest body shops in Utah; Old School Body Shop (second only to Larry Miller's shop).  Over 22 years he's built the business from the ground up.  Without his wife Kati you would be reading about him somewhere else other then here or in today's Standard Examiner - http://www.standard.net/live/news/177724/

We printed a limited amount of Striders/Old School "Don't Tread On Me" mountain running shirts if you want one; medium and large only.  You have to ask for them, they're not on the apparel racks so as not to scare the customers.

Oh ya, Cory's our Runner Spotlight for July, so you can read his Q&A at www.stridersrunning.com

Cory's favorite shoe is the InoV-8 Roclite 315 and if you mention this newsletter at Striders you can buy it at 20% off.

UPCOMING RACES AND EVENTS
spacer (1K)

We're still taking registrations for the Farmington Festival Days half-marathon, 10K & 5K on July 11th, but Thursday, July 9th is the last day to register at Striders.  There is NO same day registration.  This event is awesome; the breakfast alone is worth the registration fee.  Visit Striders for more details.

On July 18th the MormonTimes is staging a One Mile Run at This is the Place Heritage Park in SLC.  The race is FREE.  Come meet and watch Olympic athletes compete in the elite categories.  Shirts will be given to winners in each competitive division.  Park entrance is also free and YES, you can be Catholic and a Notre Dame fan and still compete in the race.  For questions contact Bob Wood at 801-237-2173 or email bwood@desnews.com

July 18th:
Wasatch Speedgoat 50K -- www.wasatchspeedgoat.com

July 24th :
Deseret News Marathon, 10K & 5K Walkwww.deseretnews,com/run

Okay, if you plan on running up Baer Canyon with Crazy Bob in the Bairgutsman on August 1st, the race is quickly reaching capacity and once it's closed, it's closed to everybody.  The only place to register is at Striders or at Active.com.  Here are the details:  6am start time on Mountain Road in Fruit Heights.  $55 entry fee, NO REFUNDS.  Awards for the top male and female runners; all finishers get a shirt.  The race ends in Farmington Canyon at the gate after running up the canyon and down the service road.  You have to find your own ride the rest of the way down the canyon, or you can run home.  It's a hell of a run and can get very expensive for you if you have to be air lifted off the mountain; so don't try to compete with Crazy Bob unless you know what you're doing.

August 1st  - Layton Triathlon; Rinse, Ride, Run, Repeat or Relay (Team) -- www.laytontriathlon.com

Shotgun Jackson from K-BULL 93 will be hosting the Avalanche 97 Kickin It Up 5K & 1K Kids Fun Run on August 15th at Jensen Nature Park in Syracuse!  This is a very safe and fun course.  The entire 5K & 1K Kids Fun Run are run on a paved trail that goes through the Jensen Nature Park.   Water and fruit will be provided at the end of the race.  (Sorry, no strollers allowed) Awards will be given to the top 3 in each age group of the 5K.  All participants in the Kids Fun Run will receive an award and a fun prize!  Visit Striders for registration info or go to www.stridersrunning.com  to download a registration form.

The Avalanche 97 is a 12 year old girl's soccer team.  They have won the Utah state championship two years in a row.  They now have the opportunity to travel to other states to play in several tournaments representing Utah.  This is a rare and exciting opportunity for these girls!  If you can't come but still want to donate, please contact Cindy Bell at (801)589-5687.

The Davis High School DART Challenge 5K race and breakfast is August 15th at 8:00am at Barnes Park in Kaysville.  $15 registration fee, $20 day of race.  Male and female winners awarded shoe certificates from Striders.  Proceeds benefit the Davis High Cross Country Teams.  For more information contach Corbin Talley at 801-580-8713 or email ctalley@dsdmail.net

Registration is now available for the September 5th Huntsville (Monastic) Half-Marathon & (Most Holy) 5K.  Forms can be picked-up or dropped off at Striders.  For more information visit www.stridersrunning.com  Proceeds from this race benefits the Weber State University Track & Cross Country alliance.  If you're running the St. George marathon, the half-marathon is a great tune-up race.

Registration is currently available for the Antelope Island Mountain View Trail Half-Marathon on October 17th.  This is opening weekend on the deer hunt, so Antelope Island will be the only safe place to run the trails that weekend.  More details at Striders or online at www.stridersrunning.com

The 4th Annual Ogden Valley 50 mile race is scheduled for October 24th.  Limited to 50 runners.  More details to come; so stay tuned.
