2010 WINTER RACING CIRCUIT
BRUCE AND JOAN NELSON

JOAN NELSON

Joan is 53 and has been married to Bruce for 32 years and raised 6 wonderful kids-4 boys,2 girls and are grand parents to 1 granddaughter and soon to be one grandson!

Joan is a Home Economics major turned Longaberger basket consultant 14 years ago!

Hometown:  Joan was born in Wyoming, raised in Corpus Christi, TX and moved back to Wyoming to meet Bruce at UW and then moved to Honeyville, UT for 31 years! So I suppose Honeyville wins!

Here are a few facts about Joan when asked about running:

Years running:4

Weekly mileage:40-50

Favorite race distance or race: Marathon and Striders winter racing circuit!!

PR's  (5K, 10K, ½, mara, Ultra) or proudest running accomplishment: Up until October 25th,2008 it had been running ST. George in 4:09 or the Utah Grand Slam this year or the fact that I did 7 marathons, the Winter Circuit  and the Wasatch Back Relay this year ----- then I ran my first Ultra-the Ogden Valley 50 and I FINISHED it!! I will never look at a marathon the same way again.

Favorite training run: Any run in or around Honeyville-it's very rural and I go to Bear River and Deweyville a lot --"we run down Sardine Canyon and around Mantua Reservoir --- let's face it-we run about anywhere!

Why run? (motivation, inspiration): I started running because it was cheaper than therapy-I keep running because as George Sheehan put it " The more I run, the more I want to run.  The more I run, the more I live a life conditioned and influenced and fashioned by my running. And the more I run, the more certain I am that I am heading for my real goal: to become the person I am."

I love to set goals for myself and then test them. That 50 miler allowed that. It gave me the chance to see if I could endure and if I measured up. Quitting was never an option. "I would have crawled in if it came to that-but I am sure glad it didn't"

Goals: Chase Boston till I catch it and keep running till I can't.

Favorite music to run to: I have a mix of everything --- Lifehouse, Tim McGraw, Katy Perry -anything that keeps me moving!

Favorite running gear ? (shoes, apparel, etc.): Asics Gel-Kayano's and any running apparel that makes me feel good! I never leave without the Garmin!

Best advice you've been given as a runner: Get good shoes every 3-400 miles! I recommend Striders to everyone I know!

Best motivational quote: When you go to run the race and you do the best job you can, on that day, at that time, at that place then you are a winner!~Dick Beardsley

Your role model: My oldest brother who died in 2001 at 53. He never gave up and he taught me to treat each day as a gift. I thought of him when I ran St. George in 2007 and crested the top of the hill at sunrise and started tearing up. I couldn't believe I was lucky enough to be alive and running that day to see that beautiful purple and red mountain range. Also my husband and children ---- their strength and never give up attitude inspires me daily! And my Dad-he ran every morning before work, before running was "cool" and he always stayed in shape!

Favorite food: Texas BBQ, GOOD Mexican and seafood ---gee all found in Texas! Oh and diet coke! Thank Heavens I can get that HERE!

Hobbies or interests other than running :Baskets of course, cooking, quilting, gardening, camping

Anything else the world might want to know about you: Training for that first marathon in 2004 took everything I had(at least I thought that at the time) and at the finish line I realized it was only the beginning of many more starting lines and that their wasn't ANYTHING I couldn't do if I set my mind to it.

BRUCE NELSON
