SPRC Summer Nationals 2010 - Final qualifier

This run was only really ever meant to be a checkout pass, after the oil surge issues of the Saturday prior. A high gear only, full pass with no drama. What followed was apparently some quite crazy antics...

I clicked it off early as soon as I saw smoke rise from the motor. Upon turning the fuel off to cut the motor, it kicked rods out of both sides of the block. Gutted, dejected, you name it. The incrementals on the run were leaning towards something half epic. 5.50/198mph at 1000ft where it had already started slowing down, showed promise. An ET of 6.6935/173.72mph is a PB for myself, but with a silly low speed. More footage to follow!

SPRC Summer Nationals 2010 - First Qualifier
The first time the KB motor was ever run. These videos show the burnout and first run for the motor. An 8.6 shutoff just before the 1/8th as I had an oilbath and couldn't see a damn thing. 2 nipped pistons and most of the plugs were melted. Tuneup adjustments meant Sunday could still happen.
Easter Thunderball 2010 - NFAA Final

It took days to get the car back together just to qualify, and even then the troubles weren't sorted. Somehow, in amongst the carnage the class suffered as a whole, we ended up in the final due to being the only remaining working car (albeit we were nursing parts too!).

In the race, I left a bit later than Paul, and just as I started to reduce the gap, all hell broke loose. 2 rods out and the car skating around all over the place. A very poor 9.7 being the result. I trundled through the top end with quite warm feet whilst a small bonfire started...

Easter Thunderball NFAA Final (Slow Motion)
A Slow Motion HD view of the video above. A lot can happen on a run. It highlights quite well and skittish a Fuel Altered is. The chassis movement and steering input also show how they never ever go in a straight line :-)
Topnitro TV Interview
A quick interview with the pleasant chap Richard Stirling, prior to the warm-up which led into the final. A brief account of how bad the weekend turned out to be!
7.003/200.55mph

This was Jon's first run in NFAA competition, which took place at the 2009 FIA European Finals at Santa Pod Raceway. Again, the incrementals to the 1/8th weren't great. On this run the blower belt snapped going through the lights, causing the burst panel to let go, and a small fire started just as Jon went for the chutes. The smoke you see at the 1/8th was from the tyres rubbing on the wheel arches. In the middle of all this carnage, the crank had pretted much melted. An $800 crank designed for street use, can work very briefly when there's 3000 horsepower on tap!

FIA Euro Finals warm up

Having performed a miracle in getting the engine back together at the track, with the parts we had, it was time to put fire in the pipe. This is the warm up prior to running the 7.003. Initially the blower belt snagged on one of the RCD starter bracket bolts. This of course would eventually lead to the belt departing at 200mph!

6.711/209.32mph

Jon's last licensing run, which took place at the 2009 Open Sports Nationals at Shakespeare County Raceway.
The incrementals upto the 1/8th mile weren't great, but the car started to haul, before nosing over at 1000ft when an exhaust valve fell over, slowing to 209mph at the 1/4 mile.

Bug Jam licensing

The video below is a slow motion capture of Jon's 1/8th Bug Jam licensing run. The track was quite cold, and combined with a quite aggressive clutch, meant it struck the tyres at the hit. To be licensed, Jon had to keep it under power to the 1/8th - in this case, boiling the tyres all the way there!
